When Argentina Ortega, bought a 600 square foot bakery from a distant relative three years ago, she started out with four clients in a fast growing Hispanic business community.

She Baked sweet Central American,South American, Puerto Rican and Mexican pastries in the morning and then distributed them wholesale to businesses in  Richmond.

Today, her business supplies bake goods to about 250 hispanic stores in Virginia, the Eastern shore and Elizabeth City, N.C. and employs 11 peolple.

“We're busting at the seams right now", the Salvadorian native said "We don’t want to spend another winter here because that’s when business peaks, a bigger location is right in the horizon”.

They moved the bakery to a 5,000 square-foot location on 7730 Midlothian Turnpike next to the state police headquarters.

The Two sons Eduardo and Mario Dawson had a construction company for 8 seven years, but decided to invest in their mother's expanding business because of the downturn in construction, “We want to invest our money in a more stable and tranquil job for the future", said the two sons.

The current location was a step up from Ortega's home's kitchen where she began baking the pastries and selling them. But it meant more expenses and not necessarily more clients. “It was  a rough start”, she said.

“I was happy if i sold $750 a week” she said "now i make a lot more".

The Bakery has targeted Hispanic Business since it opened in the early 90's But Ortega and her sons want to go beyond the hispanic market. "It will be a multicultural store” said Jenny Dawson, Ortega's daughter-in-law.

The plan is to have a cafe with internet access, typical sweet Latin America pastries such as quesadias or cheese pastries, conchas, guava filled bread and pudding. And those looking for something more familiar, there will be muffins and other goodies  for a wider clientele.
